Research & Development

While the culturing of marine species using efficient, low energy RAS is a responsible method for production, there is always room for improvement. We are investing millions of dollars in R&D to the state of RAS technology, both to lower the costs of capital and operations, and to improve our sustainability. Our goal is to commercialize technologies that will boost the marketability of our products and to enhance our profitability.

  • Reduced Waste Treatment – Production of any protein generates a waste stream that must be managed. Our research is perfecting a process known as integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) which by culturing a series of compatible species (including marine invertebrates, micro-algae and shellfish) can drastically reduce or even eliminate waste streams from RAS operations.
  • Responsible Aqua Feeds – Currently many aqua feeds rely heavily on the capture of large quantities of forage fish (anchovies, herring, menhaden, etc.) for the production of fish meal and oil (FM&O). Due to over harvesting of forage fish in many parts of the world, and rising demand for FM&O, supplies are diminishing and prices are rising. As a result, some aqua feeds now use alternative ingredients including vegetable products. We are developing a process to mass-produce nutritious aqua feeds using materials that relieve pressure on the oceans and support further growth in aquaculture.
